The end of an era

The final concerts for the current Big Band line-up were a great success this week. Congratulations to the boys for their storming show at the Bull’s Head on Wednesday, at the School on Thursday and in Birmingham at the National Festival of Music For Youth on Friday. These performances mark the end of an era for the Band - the fourth generation has now left and we shall have to start building again with the new band in September.

Huge thanks are due the boys who are leaving (Andrew Baigey, Jack Collins, Emmett Cruddas, James D’Costa, Vincent Freely, Chris Kalcov, Matthew O’Keeffe, Matthew Liebeck, Martin Huynh, Oliver Greally). They have worked incredibly hard at their playing for many years and been wonderful ambassadors for the School on countless occasions. They have been a pleasure to work with and it has been an honour to lead the Band during their time in it.

Summer Dates for the Band

As those who follow the Band will know, we are about to lose a significant number of players as they leave the School at the end of the year. There are still a few chances to catch the Big Band however at several events early in July.

The Band will be playing at the Cardinal Vaughan School Fete, from 1.30 pm on Sunday 3 July.

The Band will make its final appearance of the School year at the Bull’s Head, Barnes, at 8.30 pm on Wednesday 6 July. This will be the final performance of the current band at the Bull’s Head before many of them leave for University and promises to be a memorable evening.

The Band will make also play the following evening, 7 July, at the Vaughan’s Summer Concert.

The week ends with a trip to Birmingham to take part in the Finals of the National Festival of Music For Youth at the Adrian Boult Hall.

Congratulations to the Band on their appearance on March 5 at the world famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Soho.

On a stage that has seen performances from all of the great names of jazz, the Band played for two hours through some of their favourite songs, joined by four vocalists and also the renowned saxophonist Mornington Lockett who appeared as guest soloist in a couple of charts.

A capacity audience were present to witness this wonderful occasion for the Band. The picture below shows the Band’s announcement on the famous Ronnie Scott’s chalk board, the same chalk board that has been used for all fifty years of the club’s history. More photos will follow soon on the site.

Many congratulations to the Band on an amazing performance at the Big Band Evening on Friday night. It was quite the simply the best the Band has ever sounded in its fourteen years of playing.

Congratulations also to the younger boys who played so well in Junior Big Band and the Monday morning crew!

The Band is give a concert at the world famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho next year.

The concert is on Saturday March 5, from 1 - 3pm and will see the Band performing one of the most legendary stages in the world of music.

Congratulations to the Band on a great performance at the Sports Foundation Dinner on Saturday evening. The Band played for more than an hour and a half, entertaining the appreciative diners with a mix of jazz, funk and pop. The Band were joined by three vocalists at this annual event which last night was a fund raiser for the Rugby Team’s trip to South Africa this Summer.

Cardinal Vaughan Big Band Adjudication

Smackdown – Good ‘jazzy’ feel – feet tapping all over the place. Good to see an extended piano solo (and baritone solo and alto solo as well!) at the heart of the piece. Sax section particularly swinging on the soli and throughout.

Better Get Hit – The right sort of energy from the start – a Mingus like messiness coupled with a great sense of the band understanding the intent of the piece – and yet tight when called for – soloists at the heart of everything – great repertoire choice [thank you - ed!]
