MFY Adjudication
The Big Band were awarded a TES Jazz Award at the finals! Here is the adjudication from the final of the Music For Youth festival: Cardinal Vaughan Big Band Adjudication Smackdown – Good ‘jazzy’ feel – feet tapping all over the place. Good to see an extended piano solo (and baritone solo and alto solo as well!) at the heart...

Lord's
Well done to everyone for the appearances at Lords over the weekend and thanks for being so committed to the band. It was a pity that ‘rain stopped play’ on Saturday - not least as we didn’t get to hear the Young Drummer of the Year’! Not that we would want anyone else to play in the Band that our very own Martin! ...

Invitation to the Final of NFMY
The Invitation email arrived on Friday evening asking us to appear in the Final of the National Festival of Music For Youth. Many congratulations to the Band - it was certainly deserved after the barn storming performance in April.
We now need to maintain the momentum up to July. The running around the hall trick will work in Birmingham as you can get off the stage. But shall we get a new idea?...

Carmello's by the Freeway
Great rehearsal today! Fabulous reading from the Band working through this monster chart. This would be a great feature for Mornington when he appears with us in April.

Bull's Head, March 2010
Some very good playing today at the Bull’s Head, especially in the second set. Excellent work fellas. I thought that the trombones were especially good today - making a really big noise and some great ensemble work adding a huge amount to the Band. Lovely for Ben to make his Bull’s Head debut and also for the soprano saxophone to make an appearance.
Great that we were able to play an entirely...

Big Band Evening
Very good job on Friday, guys, it went very well I thought. Lots of people there and they seemed to have a good time. Lots of the playing was great too - strong right until the end. Well done! I look forward to getting some photos on the site.
I was struck putting together the Set List that the repertoire is a bit stuck in a rut. We are learning new material all the time but we don’t then keep it...

Bull's Head, January 2010
Well done today at the Bull’s Head. Was a good show on the whole - a few scrappy moments but some good playing overall, especially the second half.
Hard work for the Big Band Evening - lots of vocals to get through - and then finally a couple of weeks when we can get stuck into some serious repertoire. I want to look at Florence’s Carmellos on the Highway, Bill Bailey, Wind Machine, Chicago...
